Carers Week: 9-15th June
Carers Week is now in its fourteenth year. Originally created by Carers National Association it became a partnership of four charities when Lottery money was secured from 2001-2004.
The partnership has subsequently grown to ten charities; Carers UK, Counsel & Care, Crossroads Caring for Carers, Help the Hospices, Independent Age, Macmillan Cancer Support, MS Society, Neurological Alliance, The Princess Royal Trust for Carers and WRVS. Between them these partners now provide all the funding for Carers Week.
The objectives of Carers Week are to:
- Each year ensure that tens of thousands more carers know they are not alone, and start to find out about the support and services available to them
- Celebrate the contribution that carers make every day of the year
- Inform and influence key groups, such as healthcare professionals and employers, who can significantly affect the quality of life of many carers
- Raise awareness of the role and value of carers amongst MPs, other key decision-makers and opinion-formers, and with the general public
Each year over 1,000 local and regional partners organise thousands of events and activities for and with carers, throughout the UK.
Press coverage of Carers Week, especially locally and regionally, is enormous. Over 1,400 cuttings were seen last year, and it is estimated that there will be a similar number this year.
Pam Ferris wows MP's
The Minister for Carers, Ivan Lewis, and over 60 other MPs turned up to meet Pam Ferris when she visited Parliament to promote Carers Week.
Pam, best known for her roles as Ma Larkin from the TV series “The Darling Buds of May” and more recently Aunt Marge in the Harry Potter films, said “I’m very happy to be involved in Carers Week and to help raise awareness of the many issues that affect carers across the UK, often adding further difficulties and anxiety to their lives.
Pam has personal experience of caring for loved ones and is Vice-President of The Princess Royal Trust for Carers.
